Solar + battery microgrid
A shared solar array and battery bank feeding the whole neighborhood, sized for real use and real cloudy weeks, with room to grow as homes are added.
Status: looking for land
GigaRanch is a plan to buy land and build an off-grid community from the ground up: a shared solar and battery microgrid, water from the sky and the ground, food grown on site, a workshop for making and fixing things, and neighbors who actually know each other.
The vision
Not a subdivision with panels bolted on. A neighborhood designed from day one to make its own power, collect its own water and grow some of its own food, with shared infrastructure so no single household has to do it all alone.
A shared solar array and battery bank feeding the whole neighborhood, sized for real use and real cloudy weeks, with room to grow as homes are added.
Rainwater harvested from every roof into storage, backed by well water where the land allows, plus greywater reuse for landscaping where local rules permit.
Community gardens, an orchard and space for chickens or a greenhouse. Grow what makes sense for the climate and share the surplus.
A well-equipped shop for woodworking, repairs, bikes and builds, so tools are shared, skills get passed around and things get fixed instead of thrown out.
A commons with shared meals and gatherings, clear decision-making for shared resources, and privacy where you want it. Neighbors, not an HOA.
Concept site plan
An illustrative layout to show how the pieces fit together. Tap any area to learn what it's for. The real plan will depend entirely on the land we find.
Illustration only. Not a real parcel, not to scale.
Run the numbers
How big would the panels and batteries need to be? Plug in your own numbers. This is the same back-of-the-envelope math we're using to think about the microgrid.
The math
Array kW = daily kWh ÷ (sun hours × derate)
Battery kWh = daily kWh × days ÷ DoD ÷ efficiency
Rough estimate only. Real designs account for seasonal sun, panel tilt and shading, temperature, battery aging, charge-controller and inverter sizing, surge loads and backup generation. Talk to a qualified solar installer before buying anything.
Where we are, honestly
GigaRanch is an idea with a plan behind it, not a place you can visit yet. There is no property, no price and no timeline we can promise. Here's the road ahead.
Defining what GigaRanch is: the pillars, the rough layout, the kind of neighbors we hope to build it with.
UnderwaySearching for a property with good sun, a workable water source, road access and local rules that allow off-grid homes.
Happening nowEngineering the microgrid, water system and site plan for the real land, and working through county requirements.
FutureRoads, power, water and the commons go in first, before homes.
FutureThe first homes and the first residents. That could be you.
FutureWe're looking for: lots of open sun, a realistic water source (groundwater and/or decent rainfall), zoning that allows off-grid living, and reasonable access. Mention it in the form below.
Interested in living here?
Knowing who's interested helps us figure out how many homes to plan for and what to build first. No commitment of any kind.
Note: this form isn't connected to anything yet. Submitting won't send your answers anywhere. You'll get the option to copy them instead.
